Our Eye Wellness Exam starts by asking questions about your eyes, medical & family history; but also your lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise; work related activities;
and your hobbies & interests.
By focusing on you as a person as opposed to simply the presenting complaint, we can determine the cause of your symptoms. Many people don’t realise how interconnected their
eyes are with the rest of the body.
Your Vision – Your Health – Your Wellbeing …
Education is Included
Our holistic approach involves working together to identify areas in your life where changes can be made to impact your vision and eye health. We will discuss nutrition,
physical activity, overall physical wellness, workplace set up, lighting, and more. Based on the evaluation, you will be advised on certain lifestyle modifications as
integrated part of your treatment.
Nutriceuticals
Eye supplements are nutritional products that contain specific vitamins and other nutrients that research has shown can benefit eye health and good vision.
However, as their name suggests they are designed to supplement not replace nutrients you get from a healthful diet; and cannot completely make up for serious nutritional
shortcomings of a poor diet / too much junk food - which are associated with many serious health problems including vision loss.
Results from AREDS and other nutritional studies strongly indicate that the earlier one begins to make lifestyle and nutrition improvements, the less risk he or she has for
degenerative eye disease such as AMD and cataracts. For
older patients already at risk for AMD, it is better late than never when it comes to the use of nutraceuticals.
So at Royal London, we have partnered with several Canadian nutriceutical companies to provide our patients with high quality supplements. These play a key role in reducing
inflammation and oxidative changes associated with the development of degenerative diseases
Although known as CVS [Computer Vision Syndrome] this can also be due to tablet and mobile screens, resulting in any of the following symptoms:
Eye strain
Eye fatigue
Eye irritation
Headaches
Neck/shoulder pain
Light sensitivity
Dry eyes
Double vision
Intermittent Blur
Slow shift of near to far vision
Sometimes this can be helped by simply altering the set-up of the workstation/screen, lighting, rest breaks, etc. Other times Dr. Bains may need to prescribe glasses,
adjust your current prescription, or issue a specific computer lens. The goal is to relieve excessive eye strain so that you can work efficiently and
comfortably, and go home with less fatigue. We want your eyes to work… not to overwork.
Concussion or mTBI [minor traumatic brain injury] is caused by the brain bouncing back and forth in the skull following an injury, then resulting in impairment of brain
and vision functions. Nerve fibres can get twisted and damaged and may not regenerate causing permanent problems. Possible visual symptoms:
Headaches
Dizziness
Drowsiness
Disorientation
Confusion
Foggy feeling
Lack of coordination
Slower reaction time
Nausea
Difficulty with reading
Difficulty concentrating
Difficulty with reasoning
Blurred vision
Double vision
Loss of visual field
Light sensitivity
Difficulty with everyday activities
Loss of ability to focus up close
Scientific research is now indicating that this a permanent injury which increases the risk of depression, dementia and Parkinson’s disease later in life. Whilst the
“rest until you feel better” approach still is valid, there is a growing body of thought that intervention and “therapy” to keep damaged regions of the brain active and
challenged may be beneficial. So, stimulating visual activity alongside therapy should help cognitive function return sooner and more completely than with just
rest.
